The US military’s humanitarian pier off the coast of Gaza will soon shut down after failing to stay anchored due to bad weather and problems with distributing aid. The US administration announced that aid will now be sent through Israel’s port of Ashdod.
Earlier in March, US President Joe Biden had announced the pier’s establishment to help deliver aid to Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. Since it started operating in May, the pier has delivered 8,100 metric tons of aid. However, the 370-meter-long floating pier had to be moved multiple times because of weather issues. There is no new date for re-anchoring, and the effort will soon come to an end.
