In Iran, voting for the 14th Presidential election ended around midnight yesterday. The voting was initially scheduled to end in the evening, but was extended three times, with each extension lasting for two hours. Talking to Iran’s state-run channel, Spokesman of country’s Election Headquarters Mohsen Eslami said, those people who had come before the end of the voting process and were waiting for their turns, they were allowed to cast their ballots. Four candidates are in the fray for the top position of the country’s executive branch. They are Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf; former top negotiator for nuclear talks Saeed Jalili; former Interior Minister and Justice Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi and former Health Minister Masoud Pezeshkian. Spokesman of Iran’s Election Headquarters said the winner should secure an absolute majority of the votes, or at least 50 per cent plus one vote, otherwise the run-off would be held next Friday between the two top candidates. Earlier, in a televised interview on Thursday, head of Iran’s Election Headquarters, Mohammad-Taqi Shahcheraghi, said efforts will be made to announce the election’s results before noon today.
14th Presidential Election in the country, initially set for 2025, was rescheduled following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage in a helicopter crash on 19th May.
