Buddha Purnima, the biggest religious festival of the Buddhists, was celebrated on Wednesday across Bangladesh with due religious fervour. Buddha Purnima falls on Baisakhi Purnima marks Gautama Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana on the same day.
Marking the day, the Bangladesh Buddhist Federation organised a prayer Sabha and a seminar to pay respect to Lord Buddha at the International Buddhist Monastery, Dhaka. Buddhist devotees in large numbers gathered at the Monastery and offered their prayers by lighting the lamps and they also offered fruits, flowers and candles to the statue of Lord Buddha.
A peace procession (Shanti Shova jatra) was organised by the Bangladesh Bouddha Sangskritik Parishad in front of the National Museum, Dhaka marking the Buddha Purnima.
In Cox’s Bazar, Buddha devotees took out peace rallies and processions from various Buddhist Vihars and Buddhapallis on Wednesday morning to celebrate the Buddha Purnima.
On the occasion of the Buddha Purnima, Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages greeted the members of the Buddhist community as well as the countrymen.
The day was a public holiday in Bangladesh.
