The death toll in the massive landslide that hit Kerala’s Wayanad district has risen to 93. Over 128 persons injured in the mishap are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the region. Rescue operations in the landslide-hit regions in Wayanad are still underway. The Army and Navy personnel have joined the rescue and relief efforts and rescued around 150 people from the landslide that hit Mundakayyam.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that all possible measures are being taken for the rescue and rehabilitation operations in the region. State Mourning has been declared in the state for two days from today.
People were transferred across a swollen river using ropes and winches at Chooramala, as a bridge across it was washed away in flash floods. Several persons are being rescued from the debris. Hundreds of anxious relatives are flocking to the Meppady Community Health Centre where several bodies are kept, looking for their missing relatives.
Meanwhile, the Kozhikode District Collector has appealed to the people to avoid using Thamarassery Ghat Road, so that emergency vehicles can use the road.
Several district authorities have also appealed to the public to avoid travelling to tourist spots.
