The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed us that the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of northeast India today. The monsoon has arrived two days ahead of the normal onset date of June 1. Talking to Akashvani News, IMD Director General, Mrityunjay Mohapatra, said that conditions are favourable for the onset of the monsoon in the remaining parts of South India, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, in the next two to three days. He said that the monsoon will also set in all parts of north-east India, including sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. On heatwaves, IMD informed me that the intensity of heatwave conditions is likely to reduce today. Dr Mohapatra said that due to the approaching south-westerly winds, rain and thundershowers are expected over north-west India.
