The Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, on Friday (12th July 2024)held a meeting on Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Initiated by MP Indra Hang Subba, the session was led by Secretary Sandeep Tambe, who discussed the serious issue of flash floods from glacial outbursts, particularly the South Lhonak Lake incident in October last month.
The department’s scientific team, with years of research on South Lhonak Lake, highlighted the growing risks due to climate change and other factors. They identified 16 high-risk glacial lakes in Sikkim with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The meeting emphasized the urgent need for a Regional Centre for Glaciology in Sikkim to enhance research, understand threats, and develop preventive measures.
