The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in Mumbai and few parts of Maharashtra for next two days. Many districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, witnessed heavy rainfall yesterday.
While waterlogging was reported from many areas in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, flood-like situations developed in some areas of Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and Buldana districts. Flight services at the Mumbai airport were also severely impacted.
Both the houses of the state legislature were also adjourned as many members and officials were unable to reach Vidhan Bhavan. Taking stock of the situation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said all state agencies have been put on alert.
The IMD has issued red alert for Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri till 1p.m today, indicating that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue.
IMD Senior Officer and Scientist K S. Hoshalikar said that an orange alert has been sounded for Pune, Satara, Palghar, Sindhudurga, and Thane districts.
Akashvani correspondent reports, observing the serious monsoon condition, the state government has declared holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri,Palghar districts today.
The Director of Examination and Evaluation Board Dr. Pooja Roudale has informed that the Mumbai University has decided to postpone all the examinations to be held today.
This decision has been taken to avoid any possible inconvenience of students. She further said that the revised dates will be announced soon.
Due to ongoing rain in various parts of Maharashtra, teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Sindhudurgh districts.
According to the Airport Authority, several flights were diverted and about 50 flights were cancelled due to inclement weather in Mumbai.
