Delhi-NCR air pollution: NHRC hears Chief Secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab & UP

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, heard the Chief Secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh on the 10th of this month in connection with its suo motu cognizance of air pollution in Delhi-NCR as reported in media. NHRC said in a release that after considering the response of the Chief Secretaries, it is of the opinion that farmers are burning stubbles under compulsion.It further said, the State governments have to provide harvest machines to get rid of those stubbles but they have failed to provide an adequate number of requisite machines and other measures. NHRC stressed that due to the failure of the governments, stubble burning is taking place in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and UP.The Commission has asked the Chief Secretaries to remain present again either in person or hybrid mode on the 18th of this month for the next hearing on the matter. NHRC has also asked them to file their response or affidavits within four days on the points raised by it during the deliberations and considerations of their responses.
