The government has decided to observe the 25th of June every year as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’. On this day in 1975, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed an Emergency in the country. In a social media post, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday (12th July 2024) said that the decision is intended to honor the spirit of millions who struggled to revive democracy despite facing inexplicable persecution at the hands of an oppressive government. He added that the observance of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will help keep the eternal flame of individual freedom and the defense of the country’s democracy alive in every Indian. Mr Shah said that On June 25 the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. He added that lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced.    
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas will serve as a reminder of what happens when the Constitution of India was trampled over. In a social media post, Mr Modi said that this day is also a day to pay homage to each and every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency, a Congress unleashed dark phase of Indian history. 
 
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that people can never forget how the Constitution was murdered on the night of 25th June 1975. Mr Rijiju, in a social media post on Friday (12th July 2024) said that the government has to set an example so that what Congress did is not repeated. He added it is the government’s duty to save the Constitution.
